I don’t see enough analysis about May December and how Whiteness played a role in Joe’s continued abuse at Gracie’s hands. How Joe’s racial other-ness being the only Korean kid in his White neighbourhood made him more vulnerable to Gracie’s abuse. How Gracie’s Whiteness made it easier for her to get away with marrying her rape victim and starting a family with him in broad daylight. How Gracie’s White womenhood allowed her to live with some semblance of normality as a wife and a mum and a small business owner in suburbia despite being a registered child sex offender. All things that Black disability activist Ola Ojewumi pointed out, happened to the real-life woman Gracie is based on in this thread.
And then, that same White female gaze that Gracie projected onto Joe, the gaze that dehumanized him and viewed him as nothing but a sexual object, is also perpetuated by Elizabeth.

Director: “Do you think idols need a union?”
“Of course they do. I’m pissed, we definitely need one. I don’t feel people think celebrities are human. They don’t see us as humans. When I started out in the entertainment business, there was one thing people wouldn’t stop telling me, which I didn’t think was absurd back then: “You are a product. You need to be the finest, top-quality product to the public. That’s what you are.” Even when they didn’t say I was a product, everyone treated me like one. I had to be what they wanted me to be. I had to fear losing my product value. For one thing, in my case, I couldn’t give voice to my opinions. I didn’t know how to speak up. I didn’t even know if I could at all. When I did speak up about my difficulties, the system wasn’t going to change. Nobody told me “make your own choice”, “it’s up to you”, “what do you think”, “How are you these days” I sound like I’m bad-mouthing K-pop. You know Nikita? It’s just like that movie. We were basically puppets. Who cares if I’m exhausted?”
Choi Jin Ri, you were absolutely right. Idols need to unionize. Things have only gotten worse.

something to be said about a legal system that requires a victim and a perpetrator/abuser/harasser/stalker to sit side by side in front of the same lawyer to take testimony about said event of abuse at the same time, allowing the perpetrator to openly contradict, humiliate, and verbally attack the victim in front of them. I appreciate that the lawyer taking the testimony did not accept these efforts, but it’s enough that this legal system is set up in such a way that they were put in the same room in the first place.
“I definitely feel like it was an honor to be able to put that out so publicly in an even bigger way than I ever have.”
